Tranquil Bay is a serene scene of boats on the Chesapeake Bay, sailing by the New Point Comfort Lighthouse. The lighthouse stands on a small island in the bay at the southeast end of Mathews County, Virginia. Construction for the eight-sided structure occurred between 1801-1804. In 1950, the light was powered by electricity for the first time. The county acquired the lighthouse from the federal government in 1976 and ongoing restoration efforts have been made by local organizations and volunteers.
