Vows at St. Mary's In 1849, French missionary Jean Baptiste Villars arrived in Ottumwa, Iowa, then a small pioneer town. A small wooden church was built. Throughout the years, as Catholicism grew in the area, larger churches were necessary. In 1929, construction began fro the St. Mary's Catholic Church that is still in use. Dubuque architect C.I. Krajewski planned extensively for the beautiful English perpendicular Gothic style, a design which suggests a Roman cross. Today, an active parish of over 1,400 claims this elaborate structure as their spiritual home.
