Radford University was established by the General Assembly as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women in 1910 and has been in continuous session since its 1913 opening. Dr. John Preston McConnell was President of Radford University from 1911-1937. While observing state guidelines, Dr. McConnell insisted that "good teaching required good courses whether it prepares teachers for rural or city schools." After the Depression several new initiatives began, including the construction of McConnell Library. In 1972, after almost 60 years as an all-women's college, Radford became coeducational and in 1979 was granted university status by the General Assembly. Part of the proceeds from this print donated to Radford University.
