This print features the townhouse of Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson in Lexington, Virginia, where he lived as a private citizen while teaching Natural Philosophy at Virginia Military Institute for 10 years before the Civil War. Best known for his brilliant leadership during the Valley Campaign of 1862, this West Point graduate and Confederate General earned his nickname during his stand at First Manassas. Jackson died on May 10, 1863, of wounds received at the Battle of Chancellorsville at the age of 39.
