Missouri Memories Featured on the left in this triptych is the home of Harry S. Truman in Independence, which was built in 1867 by George Porterfield Gates, the Grandfather of Bess Wallace who later married Truman in 1919. During Truman's presidency, this home was known as the "Summer White House." At center is the Old Courthouse, St. Louis, where in 1847, a black man named Dred Scott sued for his freedom, beginning a legal case which helped ignite the Civil War. The Alley Spring Mill, Eminence (on the right), once a productive flour mill, is now part of the Alley Spring National Park Site. The mill, which now houses exhibits and photographs of the history of the Ozark landmark, can be toured during the summer months.
