Bel Air Plantation, Front Royal, Virginia, in Warren County. Built in 1795, this beautiful house was the home of the Buck family. At the time of the battle of Front Royal in 1862, it was occupied by William and Elizabeth Buck. They had 13 children, the oldest of whom was Lucy, age 19. Lucy kept a detailed diary, which has been published with the title Sad Earth, Sweet Heaven.CS Gen. Robert E. Lee stopped here in July 1863 following the battle of Gettysburg.
